Valient Thorr w/ Bastard Saint and Space Wolf, Triple Rock Social Club, 4/20/2009

I first heard about Valient Thorr when they opened up for The Sword back in late 2007. We (being myself, a stupid ostrich, and rhyandjay) thoroughly enjoyed their set, as they are an extremely energetic band on stage, and really have developed a unique and kick ass sound. So, when I found out that they would be coming to town on a headlining tour, we jumped at tickets and headed down to the Triple Rock to catch the show.

After meeting up at rygar’s pub to sample some of his new homebrew (which is awesome!), we were driven to the show by rhyandjay’s wife, which was very cool (and she picked us up, too!) It was amusingly reminiscent of going to a show in junior high school – and that’s not the only parallel. More about that later.

We walked in about 8:30-ish, to a mostly empty club. One of the things I love about clubs like the Triple Rock is that the bands often just hang out in the general area. That being the case, the first person we ran into walking into the club was Valient Himself. Awesome. Similarly, after the first band’s set was done, they walked off stage, and the guys standing next to us walked on stage… it turns out they were the next band.

The first band, Space Wolf (who I can’t seem to find anything about on teh intarwebbs) played a solid, rocking set. As they dedicated a song to a particular Batman comic, and their name is most likely based on a Warhammer 40K persona, I was a fan. Next up was Bastard Saint, who delivered a pounding, doomy set. I’m an instant fan. During a lengthy portion of this set, Valient Himself was standing next to me, having a beer and enjoying the show.

B33n3r decided that we should get up front for the show, so after grabbing another beer, we made our way to the front of the pit area, and Valient Thorr erupted onto stage, and then before I knew it, I was in a “mosh pit”.

Now, a brief word about pits. Way back when I was a young lad going to metal and punk shows, I would commonly put myself in the middle of such pits, as it is an amazingly fun time, a great way to enjoy a show, and the sense of community is uplifting – you’re all there to help each other out. As I got older, the nature of these pits started changing, getting increasingly violent. When I started seeing people throwing punches, I decided it would be a good time for me to hang out way in the back during shows. After several beers, we decided to throw caution to the wind and hurled our increasingly creaky bodies about the dance floor. AND IT WAS AWESOME. It felt like being 15 again, and while I fell several times (landing on knee and ass, in that order) I was instantly picked up by several people. It was a great way to check out the show.

Valient Thorr put on a fantastic show, playing with a level of energy that is inspiring. DO YOU KNOW WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT!?!?!?!?
