After spending some more time on Friday morning Battling Jackalopes, I headed out to meet Mike from Not One Stone for lunch at Jason’s Deli. I had the Sergeant Pepper, a roast beef, onions, peppers, & cheese affair with mayo and au jus. It was damn tasty. We talked band stuff, and then I headed home and walked in the door at damn near the exact time as my wife. Crazy. We then headed out to do some shopping at a few of the Asian markets nearby. We’re quickly approaching the one year anniversary of our amazing trip to Japan,* and we’re going to be doing a lot of Japanese cooking over the next month to commemorate the trip. We had an extremely successful trip, finding dorayaki, frozen unagi, various mochi (including green tea ice cream mochi), unagi sauce, and sushi vinegar. After eating a pizza and watching some Sons of Anarchy, I hit the job search hard, sending out a whole bunch of resumes.
I woke up Saturday morning to get right back at the job search, and was delighted to receive an email from a stupid ostrich inviting me out to roll up a new D&D character that evening. After running a handful of errands during the day, I made some orange chicken for dinner, and headed out to roll some dice.** While we didn’t actually accomplish any game play, it was fun to sit around with a bunch of new books and some friends, enjoying a couple of beers and some late night three player Tetris Party.
The next morning, I decided to do some digital housekeeping, organizing my bookmarks and cleaning up a variety of stray files. After my wife woke up, we headed out to the last day of the Ren Fest. As I’ve mentioned in previous years, we generally go at least twice a year to the festival, as one day can be far too hectic. It was surprisingly crowded yesterday, and very damp. While we didn’t get any full rain, there were periods of very dense mist. We didn’t really have an agenda for the day (other than to try and bring Twig home with us, but more on that shortly), so we meandered about and enjoyed ourselves. After a nice and warm piece of spinach pie, I noticed that several vendors were offering hot mead, which was AWESOME. Throughout the day, we also enjoyed berries and cream, a philly chicken sandwich, a gyro, a pecan cluster…. there’s probably other food items that I’m forgetting. As it was the last year of one of our favorite artists at the festival, we picked up four prints. I also got myself a new dice bag, as finding a set of dice in my current bag has gotten to be a bit of a chore. After those purchases, we made our way to Twig the Fairy’s booth, which is new this year, and something we completely missed during our first visit. We had stopped in earlier in the day, but she was away on fairy business. We stopped in at one of her schedules visit times, and picked up her calendar. After watching her work her magic with the kids, my wife got her calendar signed, and it was the cutest damn thing I’ve seen in a long, long time.
When my wife walked up with her calendar, she was all bouncy and giddy, and Twig did the exact same thing. Hard to explain, but amazing to watch. I went on about it in a post a few weeks ago, but Twig does a simply amazing job and brings so much to the festival. It’s easy to lose the sense of magic and wonder that I remembered about the festival from my earlier years, and seeing Twig brings it all back. After convincing my wife that we couldn’t bring her home with us,*** we made a slow loop around the grounds and headed home, after a quick stop for coffee.
Once home, I decided to say the hell with it and promptly nuked the Ubuntu install on the G4, installing Tiger over it. While I still plan on playing around with Ubuntu, I’ll do it on the laptop (which hopefully I’ll get fixed today). It’s just not worth the added frustration for use on my file server. After spending some time eliminating duplicate songs in my iTunes folder, we watched Adventureland, a surprisingly decent film. It kind of ran out of steam towards the end, but all in all wasn’t too bad. Although, if you work in my childhood theory that an actor is the same character in every film they’re in, it’s a bit confusing as to why Bella and Deadpool are in the same movie.
* Apologies to all my friends who’ve had to endure a year of stories from me that start with “When we were in Japan….” and “In Japan….”.
** Or rather, distribute points to a pre-selected starting number set.
*** Although we did bring home quite a bit of fairy dust.
